Get inspired by Digital Humanities! In recent years, digital methods have opened up completely new horizons for research. In September 2024, the CLARIAH-AT Summer School will take place at the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg, where you will have the opportunity to get to know the processing of text and image sources using innovative tools. We will start with excursions to the archives of the Archdiocese of Salzburg and the Hohensalzburg Fortress, where you will come into direct contact with the material basis. On two practical days, you will be able to get hands-on experience and experiment with DH tools together with researchers from the fields of history, German studies and art history. On the “expert day”, you will be given an overview of the various methods, tools and possible applications. On the last day, you can be inspired by a wide range of DH projects at the CLARIAH roadshow. Become part of this research community!

Framing – Deframing – Reframing. Ways, mechanisms and strategies of cultural appropriation in the Middle Ages and early modern period

Is it all a question of framing?

Throughout history, people have adapted things and concepts from other cultures or other cultural strata of their own society and modified or reinterpreted them to suit their own needs. With contributions from various disciplines of cultural studies, this volume aims to show that this cultural dynamic can best be described when the old and new frames of the appropriated are taken into account and the adaptation itself is seen as a process of de- and reframing. The approach can also be made fruitful for the political question of current and controversial cases of cultural appropriation, because only the nature and circumstances of reframing can make it clear whether it is a question of the (re)production of precarious power relations or a cultural dialog at eye level.

In order to make the DH activities of the IZMF more visible, the science blog dhsalzburg was founded in the largest German-language blog community de.hypotheses.

The blog will:

• Accompany events of the departments and cooperating institutions.
• Document conferences and workshops.
• Provide information on lectures.
• Announce publications and new releases.
• Accompany courses.
• Compile course offerings.
• Present projects and offers.
• Communicate news from the projects.
• Show application examples …

… and much more.

The blog aims to be a central source of information and documentation for researchers, teachers and students about current and future DH activities at the PLUS. It is also an invitation to them to actively engage in more DH in their own research, teaching and study environment.

In the winter semester 2023/24, the blog has accompanied the lecture series “Dazzling Data. Digital Humanities in Medieval and Early Modern Studies”. In the summer semester 2024, students of the proseminar “Mittelalter Digital” (Alan van Beek) will have the opportunity to write and publish their own blog posts.

On 10^th January 2024, the “Hohensalzburg digital” project could be seen on P.M. Wissen on ServusTV. The cultural heritage project was created under the direction of Christina Antenhofer and Ingrid Matschinegg. Walter Brandstätter (a member of the DSP “Interdisciplinary Research into Historical Cultures” programme) and Stefan Zedlacher (architect) are also essential to the implementation of the project.

At this year’s PLUS Night of Excellence, Barbara Denicolò, member of the IZMF and the doctoral programme, received the Young Investigators Award in the category Understanding Society: Education, History, Social Sciences for her dissertation “Von Speis zu kochen. Cook books and recipe collections as discursive practices and sources for the cultural history of the late Middle Ages and early modern period.” This prize is awarded annually to the best dissertation projects at the university.

We would like to congratulate Barbara Denicolò on her success!
