In order to make the DH activities of the IZMF more visible, the science blog dhsalzburg was founded in the largest German-language blog community de.hypotheses.

The blog will:

Accompany events of the departments and cooperating institutions.
Document conferences and workshops.
Provide information on lectures.
Announce publications and new releases.
Accompany courses.
Compile course offerings.
Present projects and offers.
Communicate news from the projects.
Show application examples …

… and much more.

The blog aims to be a central source of information and documentation for researchers, teachers and students about current and future DH activities at the PLUS. It is also an invitation to them to actively engage in more DH in their own research, teaching and study environment.

In the winter semester 2023/24, the blog has accompanied the lecture series “Dazzling Data. Digital Humanities in Medieval and Early Modern Studies”. In the summer semester 2024, students of the proseminar “Mittelalter Digital” (Alan van Beek) will have the opportunity to write and publish their own blog posts.

The proceedings of the VIRMA conference in September 2023 are now online and accessible to everyone! Elisabeth Anna Tangerner, PhD student at the Department of History of the Paris-Lodron University Salzburg (PLUS) and member of the DSP-Kolleg “Interdisciplinary Research on Historical Cultures” revives the conference. “Hohensalzburg digital” on P. M. Wissen

On 10^th January 2024, the “Hohensalzburg digital” project could be seen on P.M. Wissen on ServusTV. The cultural heritage project was created under the direction of Christina Antenhofer and Ingrid Matschinegg. Walter Brandstätter (a member of the DSP “Interdisciplinary Research into Historical Cultures” programme) and Stefan Zedlacher (architect) are also essential to the implementation of the project.

„Austria – The Whole History“: The new ORF-historical documentary with IZMF participation.

The heart of this year’s ORF Christmas programme will be the first season of the multimedia prestige project. The series can be seen in double episodes on 27^th, 28^th and 29^th December and on 2^nd and 3^rd January 2024, each from 8.15 pm on ORF III.

The Salzburg historians start their appearance in episode 3: “The Master Thief” with Christina Antenhofer (Head of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies – Paris Lodron University Salzburg) on 28^th December at 8.15 pm. After this Elisabeth Gruber (Head of the Institute for Medieval and Early Modern Material Culture (IMAREAL)) appears in episode 6: “Big Money” and Arno Strohmeyer (Professor at the University of Salzburg for Modern Times) in episode 9: “The Golden Apple”.

Young Investigators Award

At this year’s PLUS Night of Excellence, Barbara Denicolò, member of the IZMF and the doctoral programme, received the Young Investigators Award in the category Understanding Society: Education, History, Social Sciences for her dissertation “Von Speis zu kochen. Cook books and recipe collections as discursive practices and sources for the cultural history of the late Middle Ages and early modern period.” This prize is awarded annually to the best dissertation projects at the university.

We would like to congratulate Barbara Denicolò on her success!

DSP Conference 2023

Our first external conference took place from 3^rd to 5^th July at the Archabbey of St. Ottilien, Germany. In addition to a guided tour of the abbey, the doctoral students were able to present their dissertation projects in detail. After a selected member of the faculty and another doctoral candidate had commented on the project, the discussion was passed on to the plenum.

The image database REALonline, which is operated and further developed at IMAREAL at the University of Salzburg, was presented by the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport (BMKÖS) as a showcase model for the recording and archiving of cultural heritage. In the Digital Action Plan Austria “Digital Cultural Heritage Strategy – Digital Action Plan Austria”, challenges were summarised and objectives formulated for various fields of action in the digital transformation with the involvement of industry stakeholders and an international panel of experts. The REALonline image database thus offers a good-practice example of the quality standard of cultural heritage data to be strived for.

Conference in Innsbruck

On 12^th and 13^th May 2022, the interdisciplinary conference on “Bathing. A historical-topographical search for traces (Innsbruck – Ambras)” will take place as a hybrid event at the University of Innsbruck. The conference is organised and conducted by the FG Theorizing the Body of the Center Interdisciplinary Gender Studies Innsbruck (CGI) in cooperation with Ambras Castle and led by Kordula Schnegg, Christina Antenhofer and Ulrich Leitner.

In addition to numerous exciting contributions on the subject of bathing, swimming and cures, the conference offers all speakers the opportunity to take part in an afternoon programme entitled “Wellness Ambras”, in which Philippine Welser’s bathroom and Karl Ludwig’s swimming pool will be examined and a concluding workshop entitled “Wellness and Beauty – nurturing recipes from Anna Welser’s pharmacopoeia” will be held.

Approved projects of the IZMF/IMAREAL

At the end of October three DH projects of the IZMF/IMAREAL were approved:

Digital Hohensalzburg. Linked historical data on material room furnishings and use of space: The aim of the project is the digital processing of the fortress Hohensalzburg and the accessibility to both academia and public. This will come to pass with use of new, interactive media.

The Wenzelsbibel: Digital edition and analysis: This project aims to generate the first digital edition and analysis of the Wenzelsbibel, which is the only largely complete and German speaking translation of the Hebrew Bible from the Latin Vulgata that was handed down.

How material came into the picture. Interdisciplinary research on cultural innovations using: Using AI this project aims to study paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries, in which particular interest is placed on materials and fabrics.
