In order to make the DH activities of the IZMF more visible, the science blog dhsalzburg was founded in the largest German-language blog community de.hypotheses.

The blog will:

• Accompany events of the departments and cooperating institutions.
• Document conferences and workshops.
• Provide information on lectures.
• Announce publications and new releases.
• Accompany courses.
• Compile course offerings.
• Present projects and offers.
• Communicate news from the projects.
• Show application examples …

… and much more.

The blog aims to be a central source of information and documentation for researchers, teachers and students about current and future DH activities at the PLUS. It is also an invitation to them to actively engage in more DH in their own research, teaching and study environment.

In the winter semester 2023/24, the blog has accompanied the lecture series “Dazzling Data. Digital Humanities in Medieval and Early Modern Studies”. In the summer semester 2024, students of the proseminar “Mittelalter Digital” (Alan van Beek) will have the opportunity to write and publish their own blog posts.

On 10^th January 2024, the “Hohensalzburg digital” project could be seen on P.M. Wissen on ServusTV. The cultural heritage project was created under the direction of Christina Antenhofer and Ingrid Matschinegg. Walter Brandstätter (a member of the DSP “Interdisciplinary Research into Historical Cultures” programme) and Stefan Zedlacher (architect) are also essential to the implementation of the project.

At this year’s PLUS Night of Excellence, Barbara Denicolò, member of the IZMF and the doctoral programme, received the Young Investigators Award in the category Understanding Society: Education, History, Social Sciences for her dissertation “Von Speis zu kochen. Cook books and recipe collections as discursive practices and sources for the cultural history of the late Middle Ages and early modern period.” This prize is awarded annually to the best dissertation projects at the university.

We would like to congratulate Barbara Denicolò on her success!

For those of you who are not yet familiar with our database, we would like to offer a brief introduction: The Middle High German Term Database, or MHDBDB for short, is a powerful research tool for Middle High German. Its main components include a search engine and a comprehensive dictionary in which meanings are analysed using corpus-based word articles. These articles link the various occurrences in the corpus with the corresponding meanings that apply in the respective context. This enables users not only to search for individual words, strings and terms, but also to process far more complex queries. Various annotation levels, such as grammatical data and metadata, are also available.

Over the past few months, we have been working intensely on updating the MHDBDB, including the design of a new user interface. Don’t worry, the old MHDBDB is still available to you. The new MHDBDB is currently in the Open Beta version, which means that development is not yet complete. There may therefore often be longer waiting times. We ask for your patience and help with debugging.

Now it’s your turn: We are looking forward to hearing your opinion on the new design! We would be delighted if we could win you over as a beta tester. This only requires about 30 minutes of your time, during which you can give us valuable feedback (your answers are anonymous).

We are pleased to invite you to the next lecture in the lecture series Material Worlds – The Virtual Salon at IMAREAL.

Marianne Mödlinger: Bronze doors of the 11th-12th century in Europe: Documentation, Analysis and Evaluation

on Wednesday, 29 November 2023, 17:00-19:00 (CET).

Around 30 doors made of various copper alloys from the 11th-12th centuries have survived to this day as the only surviving complex of large medieval bronzes. The majority of the doors are located in Italy. The doors were made using the lost wax technique; they could be cast as a whole from various copper alloys, or individual metal fittings were attached to a wooden support. Some doors have inlays made of different materials, which made it possible to depict various biblical scenes or saints in colour.

These doors have now been fully documented for the first time in high resolution and three-dimensionally, the chemical composition has been analysed non-destructively and the type and date of the wood used for the carrier material has been determined for selected doors. This provides us with information about the materials and techniques used, how and which craftsmen, artists and clients were involved in the manufacturing process and how the materials used and the pictorial representations on the doors together created meaning.

In previous art and cultural-historical studies of the doors, little attention has been paid to the production itself and the interplay between the material and the paintings. Comprehensive material analyses of all the doors on site have now made it possible for the first time to answer questions about their manufacture, the choice of materials and their significance.

During the lecture, the three-year research project launched at IMAREAL (University of Salzburg) in January 2022 and funded by the FWF will be presented and the first project results presented.
